Current Activities in the OU Piano Pedagogy Program

Several OU piano pedagogy majors were among the initial group of interns selected to support Keyboard Companion in digitally uploading content to the Clavier Companion website. Those from OU working on that project included Chris Madden, Rose Gifford, Jennifer Stadler, and Kristen Orehowsky. Thanks for your service to our profession!

DMA piano performance and pedagogy student and Graduate Fellow John Murphy’s article “The Neglected Consolations of Franz Liszt” has been accepted for publication in Clavier Companion.

Clara Boyett recently has had several articles accepted for publication, including an article on mindset and anxiety for the American Music Teacher and another article on performance anxiety for the MTNA e-Journal. She also has been accepted to give a presentation at MTNA in 2019! In addition, she presented a Poster Session “Managing Performance Anxiety: Contributors and Treatments” at the MTNA National Conference in Orlando, Florida in March, 2018. Way to go, Clara!

Doctoral candidate Andrea Johnson received the 2017 Provost’s Graduate Teaching Assistant Award in the humanities and fine arts. Congratulations Andrea!

John Patrick Murphy was awarded a scholarship to study and perform in the Piano Trio Workshop at the Orford Music Academy in summer 2018. The Gryphon Trio as resident ensemble will coach selected participants on piano trio repertoire, rehearsal technique, and ensemble performance practice. Also, MM student Peter Groch will perform at the Classical Music Festival Piano Seminar in Eisenstadt, Austria during August, 2018.

Doctoral student Danny Milan performed Béla Bartók’s Romanian Dance No. 1, Op. 8a in a recital in Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall in New York City in June 2018. Milan is a native of Akron, Ohio. He also traveled to Romania in July to conduct research on the piano compositions of Dinu Lipatti and perform as a collaborative pianist in several recitals in Romania with flutist Octavian Moldovean.

Todd Van Kekerix and Michael Stafford were winners in the 2018 University of Oklahoma Concerto Competition and performed with the orchestra on the Concerto Gala Concert in March 2018.

Dr. Fast took part in a panel presentation titled “Advice from the Other Side: Tips from Faculty Search Committee Members” for the Young Professionals track at the 2018 MTNA National Conference at Lake Buena Vista, Florida.

Clara Boyett presented a workshop entitled “Scope for the Imagination: Inspiring Creativity through Character Pieces” and both Clara and John Murphy presented Poster Sessions at the MTNA Piano Pedagogy Symposium at the University of Texas at Austin, January 12-13, 2018. Congratulations all!

DMA candidates Andrea Johnson and Candace Fish presented their doctoral workshops at the University of Oklahoma in April 2018. Both also presented at the Oklahoma Music Teachers State Conference in June 2018.

Graduate and undergraduate OU pianists performed over fifteen degree recitals during the 2017-18 school year. Congratulations for all of the outstanding performances!

Clara Boyett will present a Poster Session titled “Developing Confident Performers: The Pre-College Teacher and Anxiety” at GP3 in Oberlin, Ohio in August 2018.

The GP3 (Group Piano and Piano Pedagogy) Conference will be held in August 2018 at Oberlin College and is one of the three most significant conferences in piano and piano pedagogy in the US. Dr. Barbara Fast co-founded the National Group Piano/Piano Pedagogy Forum which was held for the first time in 2000. Thanks to Dr. Fast for her leadership in this important conference for our field!

Kate Acone, BM 2016, received the MarySue Harris Studio Teacher Fellowship Award at the 2018 MTNA National Conference in Lake Buena Vista, Florida.

The OU MTNA Student Chapter received the Chapter of the Year Award from MTNA in 2017.

DMA piano performance and pedagogy student Clara Boyett was named the runner up in the 2017 Clavier Companion Collegiate Writing Contest. Her articled entitled “Developing Confident Performers: The Teacher’s Role in Combating Anxiety” was published online as part of the January/February 2018 issue.

Recent guest artists at the University of Oklahoma include pianists Alan and Alvin Chow, Eric Zuber, Dr. Laura Melton, Andrew von Oyen, Dr. Reid Gainsford, Dmitry Rachmanov, Dr. Kevin Chance, Kingsley Day, Dr. Linda Monson, Jeffery LaDeur, and Chih-Long Hu.

In Fall 2017 graduate pedagogy students enrolled in Dr. Magrath’s course “Teaching Intermediate and Advanced Pianists” taught two master classes on the OU campus, working with students of area teachers.

The Donna Turner Smith Competition in piano is held every two years in the spring semester at OU. The first prize award is around $2500 for an OU student who will enroll in piano the following year.
